Conditions for instruments used in whole class ensemble teaching

Suffolk County Music Service can lend instruments to schools for children to take home. This is only for pupils taking part in the Whole Class Ensemble Teaching (WCET) programme, subject to the conditions below.

For the 2020-2021 academic year, instruments must be returned to school before the end of the summer term 2021.

  1. The instrument will be loaned to your child free of charge, (except as detailed in 5 below) as part of the Whole Class Ensemble Teaching programme provided by Suffolk County Music Service.
  2. The loan is for use in, and for the duration of, the Whole Class Ensemble Teaching programme, i.e. the instrument must be returned at the end of your child's participation in this programme. Programmes do not last more than one year and may last for less.
  3. If your child moves to another school and is able to transfer to a similar programme, then this instrument must be returned, and arrangements will be made to provide another appropriate instrument.
  4. Should there be an opportunity at the end of this Whole Class Ensemble Teaching programme for your child to continue to receive instrumental tuition from a Suffolk County Music Service tutor in this or another school, subject to availability you will be able to apply for the loan of another instrument.
  5. In the event of deterioration or damage due to ‘fair wear and tear’ the Suffolk County Music Service undertakes to provide a replacement instrument or arrange for the repair and return of the instrument if this is appropriate at no cost to the school or parent/carer. However, in the event of loss or damage not attributable to 'fair wear and tear', you will be asked to bear all or part of the cost of repair/replacement incurred by the Music Service.
  6. In addition, we undertake to ensure that, on issue of the instrument, pupils are provided with all they will need to begin their instrumental experience, including reeds, strings, rosin, etc. Any replacements will remain the responsibility of the school.
  7. You must not authorise any repairs or maintenance yourself, nor should you attempt to carry out any repairs yourself. We nevertheless hope that you will support your child with routine care in accordance with the 'Care and Maintenance' leaflet, which you will receive with the instrument. In the event of any problems with the instrument, please contact your child's school.
  8. Suffolk County Music Service does not insure the instrument. We strongly recommend that you insure it for its replacement value. You may add it to your normal household insurance policy or may choose to insure it separately. Details of specialist musical instrument insurers may be obtained by contacting us at the address below.
  9. The loan of this instrument, i.e. your responsibility for it, commences from the date that the completed, signed form is received at the school.
