Remix or perform Jupiter from Holst's 'The Planets'

Our friends at the National Youth Orchestra (NYO) invite you to get creative with Jupiter from Holst's 'The Planets'. You can perform it, remix it, or sing it, live at 5pm on Friday 29 May 2020. For more details please see the information below from NYO.

If you're new to mixing there's free software you can use, such as Audacity. If you want to explore making music with technology, take a look at Bandlab for schools.

Have fun!

The following has come from the National Youth Orchestra:

At 5:00pm on 29 May, we are inviting you to take part in a live, socially distanced performance of 'Jupiter' from Holst's The Planets, celebrating the power of music to connect us across any distance.

  • Play a solo performance by downloading the parts, sharing a window into your world live at 5:00pm on 29 May - you can do this from your doorstep, or further afield if it's safe to do so, in a performance that shows the spirit of your local area
  • Remix the MP3s created by our teenage musicians: you can do this on any device, using any music production software, and share your creation at 5:00pm on 29 May
  • Sing the 'Song of the Planet' with lyrics written by poet Probably Tomfoolery - the lyrics will be released on Instagram live on Thursday 21 May - and sing live at 5:00pm on 29 May
  • Perform with others - at a distance! - by downloading parts in our five part arrangement, and play live at 5:00pm on 29 May

You can find all the information you'll need on our NYO: Our Musical Planet page.

If you write music on your phone or computer, we're inviting you to create a remix of the theme from 'Jupiter' from Holst's The Planets. NYO musicians have recorded loads of sounds on their instruments for you to remix, taken from the original orchestral piece. And the rest... is up to you!

NYO Composer Lizzy Gur, who was in NYO from 2016-19, has created this video to give you an idea, as well as creating three remixes for you to listen to. You can download them all from this Dropbox link

You can also download all the sounds, and remix them using whatever software you normally use. (If you've never remixed anything electronically before and would like to have a go, you can download lots of them for free: Audacity, Garageband, Sampler or Koala are a few examples).

Get creative, and share your video on social media at 5:00pm on Friday 29 May with the hashtag #NYOMusicalPlanet: we're also encouraging singers to sing, live, and instrumentalists to play, live, so no matter your instrument or no matter what standard you are, we want to make sure music is living and breathing at the heart of our local communities.
